Kafka's Image

In Prague there are two Kafka museums, two Kafka statues, a full selection of books by and about Kafka in every tourist bookshop, and postcards, pictures, and posters of him everywhere in the city center. It was generally agreed that in the year 2003 this iconography might have gone a bit far when The Prague Marathon used Kafka as the emblem of its poster and billboard campaign for the event. On problem is that Kafka, though he was something of a swimmer, wasn't a marathon runner. And the citation used on this billboard, from Kafka's own hand, "We were running tightly in among ourselves ... some grabbing each other by the hand," failed to convince the skeptics.
