Kafka's Image

In Prague there are two Kafka museums, two Kafka statues, a full selection of books by and about Kafka in every tourist bookshop, and postcards, pictures, and posters of him everywhere in the city center. Even Kafka's most zealous iconographers agree that things might have gone too far in 2003 when The Prague Marathon used Kafka's image as the emblem of its poster and billboard campaign for the event. The first problem being that there is no indication that Kafka, though he was fond of swimming, ever went for a single jog. And the citation used on the billboards, from Kafka's own hand -- "We were running tightly in among ourselves ... some grabbing each other by the hand" -- was not, to put it mildly, intended to describe an actual marathon.
