Kafka's First Workplace

In October of 1907 Kafka started working his first regular job in this building on Wensceslas Square. The building had recently (1900) been constructed for the Assicurazioni Generali insurance company, Kafka's employer. This company was an international one, and Kafka dreamed of serving it in some of its more exotic locations. But this would have taken several years of service, and something soon got in the way of Kafka's future career at the Assicurazioni Generali: the number of hours he had to work. Because he often had to be at the office from early morning until evening, it soon became apparent to him that he wouldn't get much writing done on such a schedule. The solution? Part-time work, of course, which he soon (July 1908) found at another firm, the Arbeiter-Unfall-Versicherungs-Anstalt (Workmen's Accident Insurance Company).
