"Franz Kafka was born here on July 3, 1883"

Here we can see the portal of the building in which Franz Kafka was born, and which his family vacated in May of the following year. The portal is all that survived a fire which destroyed the rest of the building a few years later. The unremarkable building that replaced the unremarkable original (the one in which Kafka lived all of ten months) has nonetheless managed to bask in Kafka's glory. The plaque designed by Karel Hladik and mounted in 1965 can be seen on the front wall of the building.

The Common Kavka (Corvus monedula, pronounced "Kafka," and from which comes the surname) is a crow-like bird common to Central Europe.
